Bettie Sue Lomax Carroll

Bettie Sue Lomax Carroll, 85, of Hohenwald, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, with her loving family by her side. Bettie was born on January 20, 1941, in Hohenwald, Tennessee, to the late Paul Lomax and Lassie Mae (Sharp) Lomax. From the very beginning, Bettie was an extraordinary woman. Born prematurely and weighing only three pounds, her family would place her on the oven door in an effort to keep her tiny body warm. Even as a fragile three-pound baby, Bettie was a fighter, and she would go on to live a remarkable 85 years. On September 13, 1957, Bettie married the love of her life, Wylie Carroll. Together, they shared 68 years of marriage, building a life centered around family, faith, and one another. Their love and partnership were a testament to the beauty of a lifetime spent side by side. No matter where life took them, Trace Creek was always home. It was the place they returned to and where they made so many memories. Bettie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was Karen's best friend and Wylie Paul's biggest fan, always loving and encouraging her family in everything they did. She had a kind and loving heart and had a way of making the people around her feel cared for and important. Bettie was also a dedicated nurse. After her children had grown, she decided around the age of 40 to become a nurse. She took on the challenge and did it all herself, proving once again the determination and strength that had been a part of her from the very beginning. She was meticulous in her work and documented everything, taking great pride in doing her job well and caring for others. She was a woman of many talents and interests. Bettie was artistic and loved painting. She was an exceptional cook who never needed a recipe or measuring cup; she simply knew how to make things just right. She enjoyed reading and found joy in the simple things of life. She was a woman of faith and worshipped with the Church of Christ throughout her life, including congregations at Pineview, Lomax, Sweetwater, and Little Swan. Bettie was classy and graceful, always well dressed and carrying herself with dignity wherever she went. Yet beneath her polished appearance was a woman with a warm heart, a wonderful sense of family, and a deep love for those around her. In addition to her parents, Bettie was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Edward Lomax; and her grandchildren, Jeremy Scott Frazier and Joshua Matthew Frazier. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 68 years, Wylie Carroll; her children, Karen Darlene Bennett (Dennis Adams) and Wylie Paul Carroll (Kim); her sister, Wilma Jane Lomax Bowen; her grandchildren, Amber Runions (Darin), Amanda Perttunen, Jesse Carroll (Haillee), and Sarah Greenough (Caleb); nine great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; special family friends Ricky and Nicky Edwards; her beloved dog, Winston Waylon; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish her memory. A memorial service for Bettie Sue Carroll will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in the chapel of McDonald Funeral Home, with John Eglinton officiating. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday morning.
