Judge Samuel H. Smith

Judge Samuel Herbert Smith, age 88, was born on October 9, 1937, and passed away on June 20, 2026. He was the son of the late Hollis Hooper Smith and Clayte Souix Bradford Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Fay Smith; brothers, Baby Boy Smith, Delbert Smith, and Douglas Smith; sisters, Audrey Yates, Alma-Jean Lewis, and Ima Jean Couch; and his grandson, Allan Ferguson. He is survived by his sons, Samuel H. Smith II, Kenneth H. Smith, John B. (Mary Ellen) Smith, and William M. Smith; grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Tara O’Guin, Demetria Tenefoss, Alec Smith, Emma Nordan, Lilly Smith, and Olivia Smith; great-grandchildren, Daxton O’Guin, Alana Smith, Carol Christmas, and Azrael Smith; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Judge Smith lived a life marked by service, wisdom, and a genuine concern for others. His commitment to service began long before his years on the bench. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy and the Army National Guard, carrying the values of duty, honor, and dedication with him throughout his life. Before his judicial career, Sam practiced law as a general practice attorney, handling a wide variety of cases including estates, divorces, criminal matters, and many other legal issues. He began his legal career in the office of John Wilson Sr., where he developed the skills and principles that would guide him throughout his distinguished career. In 1982, he was elected General Sessions Judge, a position in which he faithfully served his community for many years. During his tenure, he also served as Juvenile Judge, balancing both responsibilities with fairness, patience, and compassion. Even after his retirement from the bench, his dedication to the judicial system continued as he served as an Ancillary Judge for approximately eight additional years. Throughout his years in the courtroom, Judge Smith became known not only for his knowledge of the law but also for his belief that people deserved an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and move forward. Many who appeared before him found not only justice, but also understanding, encouragement, and a second chance when they needed it most. His steady demeanor and willingness to see the good in others left a lasting impression on countless individuals and families. Outside the courtroom, Sam was a man who found joy in life's simple pleasures. Whether he was casting a fishing line into a quiet lake, spending a morning hunting in the woods, crafting knives with his own hands, or settling into a good book, he appreciated the moments that brought peace and purpose. He especially treasured time spent with family. His backyard barbecues became a gathering place where stories were shared, laughter echoed, and memories were made. To his family, those occasions were never just meals they were expressions of his love and his desire to keep everyone close. A proud 32nd Degree Mason and recipient of the KCCH (Knight Commander of the Court of Honor) Degree, Judge Smith exemplified the values of integrity, charity, and service throughout his life. He earned the respect of his peers and the admiration of those who knew him through his steadfast character and unwavering dedication to helping others. More than the titles he held or the accomplishments he achieved, Judge Smith will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, respected judge, veteran, trusted friend, and a man whose kindness and wisdom touched the lives of many. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he served, and the countless people whose lives were better because they knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
