John Moritz Wilson Jr.

Master Sergeant John Wilson, Jr. was born on December 8, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Hickman County High School and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University, where he studied law and psychology. John proudly devoted much of his life to serving his country through the Tennessee National Guard. Throughout his distinguished military career, he received numerous awards and honors in recognition of his dedication, leadership, and service. Among these were the Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and two National Defense Service Medals, along with many other commendations. Recruiting was one of John’s greatest passions during his military career. His commitment and ability to connect with others led him to recruit more than 500 men, women, and families throughout his years of service. In 1998, he was recognized for recruiting excellence with a Recruiting and Retention Award. John was also an accomplished marksman. In 1981, he served as captain of the M-60 Machine Gun Team and led his team to victory at the National Match held at Camp Robinson. Competing against National Guard units from across the country, John earned the distinction of being named the best shooter. From 1982 to 1984, as a member of Company D, 473rd Support Battalion, John provided dedicated leadership at numerous tracked-vehicle locations throughout Tennessee. Later, as Company H Sergeant, he led his team to become one of the top units in the state of Tennessee. John took tremendous pride in his military service, and serving his country and helping others find their own path through military service remained among his greatest accomplishments. Following his retirement, John turned his attention to what mattered most to him—his family, enjoying life, and, of course, the Dallas Cowboys. He was a devoted Cowboys fan and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team. Music was another great love in John’s life. He enjoyed almost every kind of music, but the Allman Brothers Band and Eric Clapton were among his favorites. Some of his happiest moments were spent sitting on the back porch listening to music. That was his peaceful place, where he could simply relax and enjoy the moment. Above all, John's heart belonged to his family. He poured his heart and soul into his children and later into his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Around naptime, his little ones often found their way into Papa's arms, a place where they felt safe, loved, and perfectly content. John believed in being kind, treating people well, and appreciating the here and now. He taught his family to take their hats off at the table and always give the Lord thanks for the food before them. Affectionately remembered as a loving, kindhearted hippie, John had a genuine love for people and a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether speaking to family, a friend, or someone he had just met, he often made sure to leave them with a heartfelt "God bless you" or "I love you." John was loyal, compassionate, and generous with his love. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a treasured Papa, and a faithful friend. His family will remember his strong embrace, his music playing on the back porch, his love for the Cowboys, and, most of all, the kindness and love he freely gave to those around him. John leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Sharon Wilson; daughters, Jessica Wilson-Walker, Brittany Wilson, and Heather Mosley; son, BJ Pharris; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives, friends, and fellow service members whose lives he touched throughout the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Moritz Wilson, Sr. and Ramelle Gravette Wilson; his son, Kirk Wilson; and several brothers and sisters. John lived his life with devotion—to his country, to his family, to his faith, and to the people around him. His years of military service earned him many honors, but the legacy he leaves behind is found most clearly in the family he loved, the people he encouraged, and the kindness he showed so freely. His familiar words, "God bless you" and "I love you," will continue to echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
